Posted October 27th, 2009 by Jill Addeo | No Comments »

With Halloween just a few days away, parents everywhere are gearing up for a night of tricks, treats and child safety. Keeping track of your kids can be a chore, especially in crowds or unfamiliar surroundings. While we always suggest that you try to trick-or-treat during daylight hours, some neighborhoods begin the festivities after dark. So, any extra precautions are helpful.

Posted October 23rd, 2009 by Jill Addeo | No Comments »

In a New York Times article by Hilary Stout entitled, For Some Parents, Shouting is the New Spanking, the writer sheds light on the fact that while spanking is largely considered to be socially unacceptable, more and more parents are admitting that they have taken to yelling and screaming at their children…and then there’s the guilt.

I Hate Homework!

Posted October 13th, 2009 by Jill Addeo | No Comments »

As the school year is upon us, so too comes the onslaught of homework. My son and daughter are now in the 5th and 4th grades, respectively and with that comes the increasing academic demands. My children are quite opposite in their approaches to their schoolwork, but what is the same is the level of frustration that attacking their homework brings each afternoon.

Some ‘411′ on the Flu Vaccine

Posted October 8th, 2009 by Jill Addeo | No Comments »

In August I took my 9 year old daughter for her annual check-up with our pediatrician. Among some of the other questions I had for him, I inquired about the H1N1 virus and asked whether the recommendation was for elementary school age children to receive the vaccine and if so when. He explained that the availability date for the H1N1 vaccine was not yet confirmed although it should be available some time in October and that we should stay in contact with him as to when and if to bring the kids in to be vaccinated. He then went on to talk to me about the seasonal flu vaccine that children typically receive in October and November. He said that this year, the CDC is recommending that children be vaccinated for seasonal flu closer to the start of school and that the thought is that this may provide some additional resistance in light of the H1N1 virus. He told me to bring my children in for their seasonal flu vaccine right after the Labor Day holiday.

“A Spoonful of Sugar…” Really Does Help the Medicine Go Down

Posted October 5th, 2009 by Jill Addeo | No Comments »

Imagine my surprise…NOT, when I picked up Saturday’s New York Times and saw an article entitled, Sugary Mix Is Just What the Flu Doctor Ordered.   Given the current emphasis on flu prevention and preparedness, the company that manufactures Tamiflu is endorsing a particular blend of sugar and artificial cherry syrup which pharmacists can compound (mix) with the Tamiflu powder from capsules thus creating an artificially flavored cherry liquid Tamiflu for children.
