Recess Before Lunch…A Revolutionary Plan

It never ceases to amaze me that the most basic little moments that we take for granted in our day can actually hold the key to major change and progress in our lives. This is especially true when it comes to our children. When my husband and I started to make a conscious effort to sit down as a family for dinner rather than feed the kids and walk around eating leftovers off of their plates, the change was significant. We don’t pull it off every night of the week, but when we do, we find the rest of the evening is much calmer.  There is less wild, running around and instead more of a “settled in for the night” atmosphere.

I certainly never gave a moment’s thought to the timing of recess at my children’s school but I was fascinated by Tara Parker-Pope’s recent NY Times article on just that. It seems that some schools around the country are experimenting with scheduling recess before lunch instead of after and the results are potentially huge.
