Perhaps Opt For the Bottle Next Time….

Posted January 14th, 2010 by Jill Addeo | No Comments »

I sincerely debated whether or not to bring this article to your attention. I wasn’t sure if this was one of those instances where I would have preferred to remain ignorant. I would like to say that I just want all of you to be as informed as possible, but if I’m being honest, I think it just freaked me out and after all, misery loves company.

Always Walking a Delicate Line

Posted September 10th, 2009 by Jill Addeo | 1 Comment »

For those of you with young children, the end of summer has come and your children have headed back to school.  It is a time not only for looking forward to so many new things, but also for some new worries and anxieties for parents and children. We know that our kids will be worrying about their new teachers and how much homework they will get and if they will make friends. We worry about those same things for them along with safety and health concerns…and in the worry and anxiety department, for me anyway, the list goes on and on.

Sports Safety: Avoiding Head Injuries

Posted September 8th, 2009 by Jill Addeo | No Comments »

With the beginning of the school year comes sports season. Kids (and parents) are excited to get involved in football, baseball and hockey just to name a few. Kids sports are fun and teach kids about teamwork, comradery and healthy competition. But sports can also be dangerous if kids are not supervised or properly protected. In order to avoid head injuries, helmets are an important part of your child’s uniform. Helmets should fit properly and should be tailored for a particular sport (i.e. kids shouldn’t wear a football helmet while at bat.)

5 Tips to Keep Your Kids Healthy When School Starts

Posted August 13th, 2009 by Jill Addeo | No Comments »

School is right around the corner and with a new school year comes colds, flu and germs. Here are a few easy ways to help keep your kids as healthy as possible when they head back to school.

  1. Can Your Child See and Hear? Ensure that your child has the best chance at a great education by having his vision and hearing checked before schools starts.
  2. Immunizations. Many schools require that your child have a physical and be immunized before beginning the new school year. Be sure that you know your school’s requirements and have get your child the appropriate vaccinations.
  3. Sanitize. Stress to your kids NOT to put their hands in their eyes or mouths. Encourage your kids to wash their hands before meals and after they visit the bathroom and use hand sanitizer when needed.
  4. Avoidance. Teach your kids to avoid other sick children.
  5. Share with Care. Tell your kids not to share drinks or snacks with other kids.

With a little common sense and a lot of reinforcement, back to school doesn’t have to mean a trip to the doctor’s office.

When We Know Better, We Do Better…

Posted July 30th, 2009 by Jill Addeo | No Comments »

I can’t believe that since I started my blog some months ago, I have yet to share with you all my love…no my OBSESSION, with the big “O.”  Yes, that’s right, Oprah,  and I’m not afraid to admit it. From among her countless pearls of wisdom, it is near impossible to single out my most favorite but there are those that I have continued to refer back to over the years in my own daily life. Oprah says…”When we know better, we do better.”  This can be applied to so many things in our lives, but in the case of Oprah she often talks about this as it pertains to parenting mistakes and understanding and forgiving certain things that were “done” to us in our childhood because if the adults in our lives knew better, they could have done better. Well, as is often the case with me, I have applied this notion to food and eating, one of my most favorite topics!

We have been bombarded over the last several years with the grim statistics on childhood obesity but this recent New York Times article by Tara Parker-Pope indicates that the tide may be slowly shifting. I was an extremely overweight child, and later, an obese young adult until my early 20’s when I was finally able to get a handle on my weight. So this is a subject that I am very aware of with my own children.  According to a market research survey, “The eating habits of American children appear to be shifting. And for a change, the news is good.” It appears that as burgers, fries and chicken nuggets remain popular with children under 13, consumption of these foods at fast food chains is declining. Foods like yogurt, fruit, grilled chicken and chocolate milk are increasing. Many of the most popular chains are now required to list calories on their menus, and I know from experience that when I can show my children the differences in nutritional value of certain foods, it is easier for them to make  better choices.  When we know better, we do better.
