Years ago, when the organic food movement first came into our consciousness, I pretty much ignored the whole thing. It wasn’t that I had anything against the idea, it was just that I really didn’t understand what organic meant…and I guess I never really bothered to find out. Over time, “organic” was just one of those buzz words that seemed like it was being used to sell us more “stuff”… “stuff” that cost more than our regular “stuff.”  Even once I was married and doing a bit more grocery shopping and cooking, I still thought that organic food products were targeted towards vegetarians and health food zealots.

It is only over the last few years that I have really started to understand what organic means and more importantly, what it means to our growing children when we feed them food this is non-organic.  As with many things, once I took the time to understand what it all means, I decided to make some different choices. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no Kate Gosselin who was recently quoted as saying that when her sextuplets started school, they came home begging for, “those orange, triangle shaped chips that the other kids have in their lunchboxes.” Give me a break!  But, I have become more aware of where everything I eat comes from and I actually give a great deal more thought before just tossing things in my cart.
