In a New York Times article by Hilary Stout entitled, For Some Parents, Shouting is the New Spanking, the writer sheds light on the fact that while spanking is largely considered to be socially unacceptable, more and more parents are admitting that they have taken to yelling and screaming at their children…and then there’s the guilt.

That’s where I come in. I don’t know any parent who can say that they have never lost their temper with their child and then felt sorry for it afterwards. The difference here is that the article gives us genuine insight into the long-term effects that yelling and screaming can really have on our kids. Although, it’s mostly common sense thinking, it was a real wake up call for me as a stressed out mom. I certainly do my share of yelling and screaming and often I am aware that my anger towards my kids is displaced.  I promise myself that it won’t happen again, and yet it does. Somehow, after reading Ms. Stout’s article, it all hits home in a way it never has before.
